Sony’s persistence in carrying on with its frankly odd naming system is on show once again with the very first leaked images of its upcoming flagship – the Xperia 1 iii. The first thing you’ll notice is the similarities in design to its predecessor, the Xperia 1 ii.
There’s a glass rear panel with a very Sony-esque flat-edged metal frame running around the handset and a flat 6.5-inch CinemaWide 4K OLED panel with a 21:9 aspect ratio and HDR. As you can see there are really thin bezels on the side of the display along with a thin chin and forehead that houses the selfie camera.
According to the leaked renders and specs that come courtesy of Steve Hemmestoffer (Voice), the Xperia 1 iii is the first Sony handset to sport a periscope/telephoto lens. The rear panel houses a trio of cameras with ZEISS T coating and a 3D iTOF sensor, there’s no word on the number of megapixels present for any of the sensors yet.
Other known specifications include:
- 5G support
- 3.5 mm headphone jack
- MicroSDXC slot
- Fingerprint sensor embedded within the power button
- Dual front-firing speakers
- Dedicated new shortcut key (as on the Xperia Pro)
It’s not known when Sony will officially unveil the Xperia 1 iii but usually, it announces its new handsets at MWC and IFA. Seeing as MWC has been shifted to later in the year (and might yet be canceled once again), it’s likely that Sony will hold a virtual launch event in the next 4-6 weeks.
