Golden Apple seeking applicants for 2021 “Accelerators” program

(WSIL) — The COVID-19 pandemic has put a strain on the teacher shortage in Illinois, But The Golden Apple Foundation is working to combat that by accepting applicants for its 2021 “Accelerators” program.

It’s a one-year teacher residency and license program for those with a Bachelor’s degree or seniors in college who want to be educators in southern, central and western Illinois.

Various focus areas include Elementary and Early Childhood Education and STEM. Golden Apple says their goal is to accept up to 200 participants and partnering with additional higher education partners and school districts across Illinois.

“When I talk to the superintendent at Cobden or a principal at Harrisburg or the principal at Egyptian High School, they have all articulated the need for teachers across the board that to keep teachers in rural communities has been particularly hard,” said Golden Apple Foundation president Alan Mather.

Participants will receive a $25,000 to $30,000 stipend for coursework or living expenses.
